My First Awareness of My Passion for Making Art

I first felt a passion for art after doing a pastel in the 5th grade that I loved. It wasn't until the following year, at the urging of an older brother, Carroll Little, that it went any farther. He liked an abstract design I'd done, and he told me to ask my art teacher to help me with an oil painting. That was WAY beyond my comfort zone, and I told him I couldn't do that. Wise man that he was, came back to me a little later and told me to tell her that I had a brother who wanted me to do an oil painting for him, and would she help me with it? Since I'd have done anything for him, that was a no brainer.

After I approached her about it, she said I should do a practice painting first, so she gave me a stretched canvas, paints, a few brushes and some turpentine. She had me do a praying Madonna out of my head, but I'm sure she guided me with it. My math teacher saw my painting and wanted me to do another just like it for her. She supplied the canvas and I was in business.

Upon completion of the second Madonna, my art teacher, Rose Hargrave, set up a still life for me. Of course, she helped me with it, and I thought it was beautiful. It involved a piece of driftwood and an abalone sea shell. Of course, there was fabric, too.

I was thrilled with the whole concept of painting! My brother liked it, too, and actually framed it. There's more to this saga, and for a future post, stay tuned.) (There were definitely some bumps along the way.

Fondly,

Anne Davis
